DU’s Contributions

Helping the Homeless

Although I have only been a Denver Pioneer for a few short months, I have quickly seen the involvement that the University of Denver has with the Denver homeless community.

Every Thursday on DU’s campus there is a gather of student and staff who collectively make Pb&J packs (or other particle meals). They spend the night making the packs and then every Friday there is a delivery around the city to those in need of a meal.

There is another group on campus that works in conjunction with the school’s cafeterias. Every Friday and Monday there are a group of students who visit each dining hall and collect any preserved food from the day. This food is then taken to the House of Hope twice a week for the women and children in need.

The University of Denver has partnered up with The Colorado Village Collaborative to construct temporary tiny housing that will house about 14 people. This project hopes to continue and already has another location in mind once construction is permitted and successfully built.

The Homeless Advocacy Policy Project (HAPP) at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law is a student-driven project focused on researching the laws criminalizing homelessness and advocating for the rights of homeless individuals.
